US supermarket sees credit card details of over 4.5 million people stolen

Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain today announced the theft of over 4 million customers credit and debit card numbers.

According to The Boston Globe, the data breach affected customer cards used at more than 270 stores in the US including Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont and lasted from December until early March.

In an open letter on the Hannaford Bros. website, CEO Ron Hodge assured customers that the stolen data was limited to credit and debit card numbers and expiration dates, and was illegally accessed from their computer systems during transmission of card authorization.

A spokesperson told the Boston Globe that the stores have have met industry standards regarding how customer data is stored and maintained since last Spring.

Just be glad you don’t buy your bread and milk in the states.
