Hewlett-Packard Co. is shipping a new smart-card security system for its OmniBook notebook PCs.
The Mobile ProtectTools Smart Card Kit 2.0 includes a smart-card reader with enhanced security features such as BIOS boot protection, which authenticates user identification as soon as the system is turned on rather than after the system software is loaded.
The kit also includes a screen saver and unlock and resume functions that use the smart card for secure access rather than a password.
Available now, the kit sells for an estimated street price of $99.
