VIDEO: HP Fires Back at iPad with New Slate Ad

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Although touting iTunes on its Slate doesn't help bolster its stance much.

As if in retaliation to Apple's launch of the iPad over the weekend, HP released a new promotional clip for its upcoming Windows 7-based tablet, the HP slate. But for some reason Engadget seems to think that the device may be able to sync with the iPod Touch or iPhone based on the white USB cable shown in the clip. While it's not exactly difficult to find a white USB cable, the idea of Apple to HP synchronizing is a rather cool idea nonetheless. Highly unlikely? For sure.

Unfortunately, the new footage doesn't really reveal anything specific about the device. What you'll see is the built-in cam in action, and the tablet's abilities to be used in video conferencing. There are also a few apps on display in the video as well including Skype, Rhapsody, Firefox, and a few other generic apps for videos, photos, the camera, and more. There's also an indication that the device may have a video-out feature, and an option to expand the device's storage via an SD card.

"Think about the last time you chatted with friends over Skype on your notebook," HP teased in this blog. "Or uploaded a picture from your mobile phone to Facebook or Flickr. How about the last time you viewed images or video from an SD card or a USB device. We know that you expect to be able to capture and share digital content on your mobile devices. And the HP slate device excels there."

Previously we reported that the HP Slate is "slated" for a June release with an expected pricetag of around $546. The video confirms some of the previously-reported specs: a memory card reader, a rear-mounted integrated webcam, and USB connectivity. The device will also come packed with Intel's Atom processor and Adobe Flash, making it a tough contender against Apple's iPad this summer.

Fantastic, I really hope this wipes the floor with those iPads, the idea of owning a device where every bit of software I purchase has to be approved by the manufacturer (and who takes a cut of the sale) makes me feel sick....

Rear mounted? *sigh* another non-buy for me. I want a decent tablet with a front mounted camera!

A webcam mounted on the rear is not a WEBcam because you can't use it as a WEBcam...

Just so you know...

The Slate will have BOTH a front facing and rear facing camera....

a spec sheet appears here: from engadget which compares it's specs to the iPad.... makes an interesting read.
