HMRC to foot the bill for disc search
British police have searched high and low for those two discs of data. . .
The loss of two disc of data containing the child benefit data of 25 million people understandably caused ructions. People were fretting about their details being stolen and others (not saying anything about poor Jeremy Clarkson but, Jeremy Clarkson, Jeremy Clarkson, Jeremy Clarkson) pooh-poohed the whole thing claiming that everyone was getting their knickers in a twist over nothing.
Well, whether it was something or nothing, the government would definitely be more comfortable if they got those discs back safe and sound and it turns out the HMRC will be paying for the investigation.
Scotland Yard said yesterday that it would be forwarding the bill for what’s reportedly the most expensive lost property search in the UK to the HMRC.
A spokesperson for the metropolitan police department said “We will be seeking full recovery of the cost of the investigation. The investigation is being wound down but it is not concluded."
Gone but not forgotten. Sigh.
