Specifications – Radeon HD 3650
The xx50 versions of the new generation correspond to the previous Pro models, while the xx70 variants are the successors to the faster XT parts. According to ATI’s specifications, the 3650 also exists in two versions, either using DDR2 or GDDR3 memory. Out review sample, provided by Sapphire, is an overclocked GDDR3 version sporting an active cooler. Whether ATI intends to release an HD 3670 at some point in the future is currently unknown.
Equipped with 120 stream processors and a 128 bit memory interface, the HD 3650 (GDDR3) is almost three times as fast as the HD 3450 (DDR2). Still, its 3D performance is not always sufficient for relaxed gaming sessions, and the chip is a bit underpowered for high resolutions and elaborate DirectX 10 effects. Set to medium quality in a resolution of 1024 x 768, the card is more often able to provide smooth frame rates. That makes it an ideal choice for an HTPC that doubles as a casual gaming system every now and then.
