Greenpeace slams poison Apple iPhone

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Environmentalists at Greenpeace are very upset over their recent findings about Apple’s iPhone.

Greenpeace dissected one of the Apple phones only to discover (to their horror) that it contained not one, but two hazardous chemicals, toxic brominated compounds and hazardous PVC, which have allegedly already been eliminated by other mobile phone manufacturers.

Greenpeace scientists tested 18 internal and external components of the iPhone in their labs found brominated compounds (which indicates the presence of brominated flame retardants) in half the samples.

A mixture of toxic phthalates was found to make up 1.5 percent of the PVC coating on the headphone cables. Greenpeace pointed out that Nokia devices are PVC free and other major manufacturers such as Motorola and Sony already have products on the market with BFR free components.

Greenpeace are calling for Apple to issue a global recall of the iPhone and with the launch of the iPhone in Europe next month they said that Apple should take a leaf out of competitors Nokia and Ericssons’ book and offer a greener alternative.
