Google Voice Hits the UK
We've been making Gmail to Gmail calls for a while but what about the paid features of Google Voice?
Google Voice first hit the U.S. last year, allowing people to make calls right from their Gmail account. This week, the service went international, with Google announcing that it's now available to 150 countries (in 38 different languages) and the UK is on that list.
"You can now buy calling credit in your choice of four currencies (Euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars or U.S. dollars) and there are no connection fees, so you only pay for the time you talk," product manager Pierre Lebeau said in a blog post yesterday.
Lebeau also noted that to help reduce the cost of Google Voice for users, it's lowering rates around the work.
"For example, it’s now only $0.10 (or €0.08) per minute to call mobile phones in the U.K., France or Germany (landlines are $0.02/min), $0.15/minute to call mobile phones in Mexico and $0.02/min to call any phone number in China and India. The complete list is available on our rates page."
Calls within Canada and the U.S. continue to be free but Lebeau didn't mention anything about a similar deal for countries outside of North America.
Google will be rolling out the new features over the coming days, so keep an eye out for the little green phone above the chat panel.

In the UK we use the £ not the $ or the €, so if you going to do examples atleast do them in the right currancy.
@Thisisaname: you appear to be using small, dried, seedless grape... the rest of us use the word "currency".
What about single number reach and voicemail to text. Without these google voice is not google voice.
Google Voice is not available in your country.
Thanks for visiting Google Voice. We're not yet open for users outside the US, but are planning to expand our service to additional countries in the future.
I logged into gmail this morning the 17th Aug 2011 & a pop out said it was available, I downloaded & installed the software & then went to test it & it said it was only available in North America. Most irritating.
This would be a cracking service, not only for personal use but to a wider audience. With the pinch on some many people, business & schools this could make the difference between sinking or swimming. For education it could mean keeping staff on, buying paper & pens or simply heating the place!
Roll on, roll it out.
@thisisaname In the UK we use the word currency to refer to the generally accepted medium of exchange. These are usually the coins and banknotes of the UK government, which comprise the physical aspects of the nation's money supply. Learn some English if you want to voice a counter opinion, this can become handy to support your point.
