GoDaddy Stops Registering Domains in China

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

GoDaddy has said that it will stop registering domains in China because of new government rules that the company believes are intrusive.

The Washington Post reports that GoDaddy today informed lawmakers that it would no longer be registering domain names in China because of new rules that require applicants to submit extensive amounts of personal information.

The company said it believes the new rules, which include the requirement that applicants submit photos of themselves, are a bid to increase the level of surveillance of content on Web sites. According to the Washington Post, GoDaddy believes the rules could put its customers at risk and is wary of the "chilling effect" it could have on new registrations.

The news comes after Google's decision to leave China and on the heels of rumors that Dell is contemplating relocating its Chinese operations

Hm, there appears to be a trend growing at the moment. Though it's too early to say, I think China might well be shooting themselves in the foot.

50-50 really mate. How would they manage if they didn't export or import anything?

The problem China faces is they've given their people a taste of freedom after Tiananmen Square by opening up the country slightly. Since then they've kept them from demanding more freedom by delivering huge economic growth. At some point the growth is going to plateau and that particular tool in their toolbox of population control techniques will be lost.

You can only control a large group of people through fear and intimidation for so long before they get so pissed off that they revolt. So if China isolates itself from the rest of the world like this, and alienates all their trading partners, eventually something's going to snap.

I wouldn't worry about the economy of the rest of the world. There would probably be a few years of less (or negative) growth and the US might suffer a lot, but capitalism will just find some other cheap labour state to supply it's need for sparkly things. There's plenty to choose from.

Once Kim Jong Il dies/is deposed I'd expect North Korea will have a massive surge in it's manufacturing economy for example - provided he's not just replaced with more of the same of course.

Way I see it, is that China will simply provide these products and services themselves. Google wasn't the biggest search engine in China. China is perfectly capable of producing PC's and registering their own websites. Only ones losing are the companies that are denying themselves access to such a huge market.
