New Palit GTX460 Sonic Uses 2GB GDDR5

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Palit will release a factory-overclocked GTX 460 card with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

Wednesday Palit Microsystems Ltd. introduced the GTX460 Sonic 2GB, its latest entry in the GTX 460 series. As the name implies, the card provides 2GB of GDDR5 high speed memory clocked at 3.6 GHz on a 256-bit memory bandwidth. The card also has a factory-overclocked core speed of 700 MHz--25 MHz higher than the reference speed.

When compared with the previous-generation GeForce GTX285 2GB, Palit's GTX460 Sonic 2GB provides a 12-percent increase in performance when rendering visuals at a 1920 x 1200 resolution. "It also enables end users to enjoy extreme enhanced performance while playing the latest DX10 / DX11 PC games under HD large screen and high quality imagery," the company said.

Palit also threw in a huge, 2-ball bearing fan keeping things cool while the GF104-powered card cranks out DirectX 11 visuals. Other bells and whistles include 336 CUDA Cores, a shader frequency of 1400 MHz, 2-way SLI support, D-Sub, dual-DVI and HDMI outputs, and more. The card is also 3D Vision ready, 3D Vision Surround ready, and supports DirectCompute, OpenCL, OpenGL 4.0, and 32x Anti-aliasing technology.

Stay tuned for pricing and availability.

Oh yes, 2GB will really up performance. An ATI 5870 hardly benefits from 2GB memory, so what could a 460 possibly hope to do with so much memory? Unless you're one of these idiots running games at 32x AA, it's not going to help much.

I think this will help when running 2 of them for NV surround.

There's more to a graphics card than playing games. Eyefinity and MG Surround benefit from more RAM than reference.

Don't think the 460 has the grunt to be used a highest resolutions and so doesn't need this level of memory, the situation would be different if you were using two in sli for multi monitor setups or on a large high res 30" panel in that case the 2GB model would be a better choice.

All i have to say is DUH!!!! Ofcourse it's going to be 12% faster, your comparing an older nvidia card with the latest firmi architecture.

It's like saying a ferarri 430 is 12% faster than a ferarri 250gts because it have an extra exhaust pipe.

Eyefinity is ATI only, but I get what you mean. But how many people use such features? Those who have the cash to blow to game on multiple monitors will usually also have the money to buy more high end graphics cards, and traders and other people running only 2D apps on multiple screens will find lower end ATI's better value for money.

Holy crap you all be any stupider?

Stupid? If someone is on a higher res, they need more AA.

Excuse me, but there are a lot of people who have multiple monitors who won't be able to afford a 'must better card'. There is a target audience for this card.

Apparently you don't understand statistics; we want to know HOW MUCH it has increased, hence the number "12%", saying "DUH" to 12% is the move of an irrational idiot, since I don't think anyone could have predicted an exact percentage, especially someone with a mental capacity as drained as yours.

It's not a DUH statement, it is in fact the opposite; it is informative.

Your argument is pointless and clearly its yourself clintonio who doesn't understand the problem here. If your going to compared the 2gb 460gtx with something you compare it with a 460gtx with the standard ammount of memory onboard to see how it peforms against the default release, NOT an older card with a different hardware architecture, which is going to be slower even against a bog standard 460gtx.

This will provide huge benefits for those using Octane render on a budget, I'll be looking to get one
