Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
It’s hard to pinpoint what it is that’s so loveable about Lego Star Wars in the first place. The fundamental idea has an obvious and simple charm to it that fans of either Lego or Star Wars will pick up on fairly quickly, but for many there’s a worry that Lego Star Wars won’t provide anything more than novelty value.
While the fact that the whole game is presented in Lego provides the initial entertainment, it’s the Star Wars themes and storylines that breathe lasting life into the games. One of its most laudable achievements is that Lego Star Wars isn’t just a game based on the Star Wars films, it’s a surprisingly complete reproduction of both the old and the new Star Wars trilogies that manages to leave out surprisingly little. What’s more, the dramatic sequences that have been kept in are all acted out by Lego versions of the characters, which comfortably lend a comic feel to the proceedings.
The other draw for the Lego Star Wars games has been the vast amount of unlockable content, and it’s nice to be able to say that The Complete Saga is no slouch in that department. It boasts a 160 character strong roster, which means that fans of the most obscure characters should be able to find something to amuse themselves with. The news that Chewbacca can now rip off other characters’ arms alone was music to our ears.
The best reason to jump at The Complete Saga isn’t the for-all-the-family storyline or the relatively simple gameplay, but the fact that the game so fundamentally supports co-op multiplayer. It’s one thing to have a game that anyone can pick up and play, but on Christmas morning there are far worse things to be doing than “accidentally” light-sabreing the kids. Just remember, you’re not “wasting time with a game”, you’re introducing a younger generation to the better movies.
