Firefox Updated to v3.0.6

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

To make matters even worse for Internet Explorer, Chrome and the other fledgling browsers, Mozilla updated its popular Firefox browser to v3.0.6

Mozilla's latest update to Firefox 3 includes several security and stability issues including a critical vulnerability involving memory corruption, a few high vulnerabilities with SessionStore and XSS using a chrome XBL, and a moderate vulnerability in chrome privilege escalation. The changes aren't quite as extensive as 3.0.5 or 3.0.4, but users will benefit from an improved ability for scripted commands (like Adblock Plus) and corrected display issues. Mozilla also removed client user ID information from crash reports.

According to TechTarget, SessionStire saves session information that includes text typed in forms, open windows and tabs, and window size and position. Malicious scripts in a web page can steal the user's local file once the user re-opens a manipulated tab. Additionally, the XBL (extensible bindings language) error could be used to execute arbitrary JavaScript. Attackers successful in exploiting the flaw can access the victim's cookies and recently submitted data.

As of last month, Mozilla's Firefox ranked #1 in browser usage, racking in a whopping 45.5 percent market share according to these statistics. Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 falls into second place, taking up 25.7 percent of the market, followed by Internet Explorer 6 with 18.5 percent. In fact, Firefox didn't take the lead in the browser wars until September of 2007, taking a .5 percent lead over IE6. But as of late, Internet Explorer has lost even more ground with Firefox, dropping .5 percent from November to December, suffering a steady decrease in usage since July 2008.

Although Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome are slowly gaining ground, their market share percentiles (3.9 percent for Chrome, 2.3 percent for Opera) dictate that both Internet Explorer and Firefox have nothing to worry about for now. January even showed that 0.6 percent of the users chose the new Internet Explorer 8 beta.

Stats selected for this news item are NOT accurate.

From w3schools:
"W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers.

These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users."

mi1ez> I'd know those knorks from a mile off. They are the IE boobs!
The odd thing is, it’s the exact same pose, using the exact same camera angle.

Given that there many other browsers out there I am looking forward to a total market roundup. No text is needed – just exact same pose & exact same camera angle.

I also want to see the CPU, GPU and HDD t-shirts. If they can no longer be bothered to give us UK prices and UK stories – I think I’ve found a compromise which I very happy with.

I must apologise if this is crass; but I’m getting on a bit and sometime re-living my teenage years is the only joy life brings mid day at the office.

@mi1ez:

I seem to recall that's the original photograph for this particular lady. Mozilla did a Firefox event a while back and got some TnA wearing tiny Firefox vest tops.

The IE version came about afterwards with somebody Photoshopping the vest top pure white and mapping the IE logo on it.

I think I've even seen Opera and Safari versions too.
