New York Attorney General issues warning to Facebook
Albany (NY) - Following a probe into the social networking site’s policies and practices, the New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has issued a warning to Facebook, calling for immediate corrective steps. Cuomo announced last week that he had send a subpoena to Facebook as a response to concerns that the site was not taking adequate safety measures to create and maintain a safe portal for underage users.
According to the complaints, many adult users have created bogus profiles claiming to be teenagers, and then engaging in questionable discussions with legitimately underage users.
After a preliminary investigation, the state AG’s office says it has reason to believe the allegations. "We expect an immediate correction eliminating the dangers exposed by our investigation," said spokesperson Jeffrey Lerner.
An official in the investigation told the Associated Press, "Correct the language describing the site and stop marketing yourself as this pristine Web site ... parents have a misimpression. You can’t mislead people."
