Facebook group organises worldwide carrot shortage
I am jumping ship. They’ve all gone mad. Britain is going bananas. . . Or Carrots as the case may be.
We always harp on about how not a week goes buy with out there being at least one story about Facebook.
Sometimes they’re amusing (did Microsoft really spend that much money on a 1.6 percent stake ?) and sometimes they don’t come to anything (Still no word on an Irish office) but they’re almost always bizarre.
We at Toms UK and IRL have come to the conclusion that Facebook is a place that brings all kinds together and unites them in their cause. Even if that cause is saving Scrabulous or organising a world-wide carrot craze.
Yes, it’s true. Facebook group “On May 15th 2008, everybody needs to go out and panic buy CARROTS” is snowballing and has already gathered over 90,000 members.
The general plan of action is that on the 15th of May, at 2pm, all members should panic buy as many carrots as they can get their hands on.
"If everyone does this, we can make this global shortage of carrots happen," writes the group’s creator, Freya Valentine.
Valentine has since released a statement saying,
“Right, as we seem to have attracted the attention of the news and such now, I would simply like to tell the newsy folks that, this group is all in good fun, we know we’re not going to cause a massive world wide shortage, it’s all a bit of fun, and to the carrotty people who are saying "Well. This could never happen. We grow too many carrots for such things to occur. No." Maybe you should be thankful for the imminent rise we are probably going to make in your profits on May 15th. If you are all carrot farmers, that is.”
Needless to say the "carroty people" are very happy at the prospect of people buying carrots in bulk. David Martin, Vice Chairman of the British Carrot Growers Association told Sky News,
"It’s an extraordinary proposition. Purchasers can be assured they’ll have a fine product in the middle of May - as long as they buy British carrots. Bring it on ! Let’s try and reach a million members !"
There are several people against the Carrot-craze group. Their group is appalled at the idea of adding to world hunger and condemns the carrot-buying scheme as an attempt to deprive the world of "vital vitamins". The group has 29 members and counting.
