Fujitsu Siemens Activy Media Server 150
Fujitsu Siemens’s Activy Media Server 150 is barely larger than an external hard drive and impressed us with its flexibility and versatility. On the one hand, it is a NAS-device and can act as a fileserver, a web server or an FTP server. On the other hand, it is also a full-fledged uPNP media server, thanks to the TwonkyMedia software.
Installing the Activy Media Server in the network is a simple affair, and the server is ready for use as soon as a few settings have been configured through its web interface using a browser. Another point in favour of this device is its very attractive price. Bundles with a 500 GByte hard drive, the AMS-150 costs just under € 200. That’s a real steal, considering that you get both a media server and a Gigabit-NAS that can be expanded using eSATA and USB drives. The media server is based on the TwonkyMedia software, which costs € 30 alone. Factoring in the price of the hard drive, that adds up to € 130 – which means you’re getting the Gigabit-NAS for only € 70. This alone would already warrant a recommendation and will certainly catch the competition’s attention.
| File-Server | Store files of any kind on the network with per-user or group access rights. Files are accessed either through Windows or by HTTP-transfer. |
| FTP-Server | Store and share files in remote folders. Files are shared either per user or group policies. |
| Web-Server | Set up your own web server and make your own content available on the Internet. |
| Media-Server | Store images, music or video files that can be received by uPNP clients. The files remain on the NAS device and are only streamed to the client. Usually, the content will be played back on a TV. |
| Internet Radio Server | The server searches for Internet radio stations and makes them available to any client on the network. |
