FBI DNA database seriously backlogged
Washington DC – The FBI is seriously backlogged on adding new samples to its national DNA database. Since 2001, only 34000 out of an estimated 200,000 submitted samples from federal convicts have been added.
The FBI says the 34000 samples that were added have been very helpful in solving crimes and 600 matches have been found in that group. If the percentage holds, an addition 3200 crimes could be solved if the remaining 166,000 samples are added.
Last January, the DNA Fingerprinting Act was signed into law which requires all those arrested on federal arrestees to submit DNA samples. So far the sampling has not yet begun.
