Following activism orchestrated through EuroLinux, the European Patent Office was stopped from overturning current laws that ban patents on software. Most software firms seem happy with the current arrangement, finding protection for innovation in existing patent laws, but a powerful pro-software patent lobby led by patent lawyers has come close to changing European law.
