Eurocom Shipping First Hexacore i7-980X Laptop

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Eurocom yesterday announced that it will ship the world's first six core notebook.

Eurocom is known for cramming the latest technology into small-ish form factors; it was the first to offer a Core-i7 notebook, for example. The D900F Phantom i7 was a mobile workstation and featured a 17-inch display, Intel's Core i7 processer and X58 chipset as well as Nvdia's G280 GPU. The entire thing weighed a backbreaking 11.9 lbs. Not exactly something you could throw into your briefcase and take home in the evenings but it was mobile nonetheless.

Today Eurocom is offering another "it's-only-as-portable-as-you-are-strong" notebook. This one boasts Intel's six core i7-980X Extreme Edition or Xeon W5680 and is called the Eurocom D900F Panther. The mobile workstation features Nvidia Quadro FX OpenGL graphics, up to 24 GB of DDR3 and up to 2.6 TB of storage (across four HDDs). You've also got the usual bells and whistles like Ethernet, HDMI, eSATA, DVi Dual Link ports as well as a 17" WUXGA LCD display and full size keyboard.

Again, this is one hefty machine. Measuring 15.8" x 11.9" x 2.05" the Panther weighs in at "under 12lbs." As for price (you probably don't want to know), the base model rings up at just over $3,000. Yikes. More on Eurocom.

Who on earth needs this? If you need a workstation, get a full size desktop model one, way more comfortable to work on. If you need a portable PC, get something you can actually move around without a wheelbarrow.

Okay, there might be someone on this planet who absolutely needs to be able to transport his workstation regularly, but how can a company survive on such a small niche?

Awesome laptop, As to weight and battery life, Small people don't have to buy big laptops and if you intend on buying a laptop to use solely on its battery with the occasional charge, You are kidding yourself no matter what you buy.

Its nice to see someone offsetting the horror that is netbooks.

Sometime I have been thinking...
Why do people buy a laptop if it is big and heavy.
At first I didn't believe that someone will even buy such a thing, but some of my friends at the university really bought them and actually carry them around.
They are carrying a laptop with quad core i7, HD5850, 2 HDD in RAID, 18,4" display with more than 6kg weight, not including the power supply adapter.
I can not imagine myself running around carrying a more than 5kg laptop in my bag.
I have and will always have one gaming rig for the performance need and one middle classed laptop (13"-15,4", max 3kg, less than €1000) for mobile application.

I'm a Uni student who regularly needs to move his workstation around the country, sometimes between countries. It may be a little out of my price range right now (although it wouldn't be if it weren't for the international travel thing) I'd buy this alongside a regular notebook, netbook and smartphone.

I'm writing this comment from a high-end 2007 era notebook, and I'm 100 miles from my desktop which is like a giant small-child-sized paperweight for 4 months of the year. I could do with the extra power for my programming and gaming needs.

So, I guess you can add one to the 'niche'.

Rather than being "portable" this is more a desktop replacement. If you do not have space for a PC but want the power of one in less space this is idea. Take it out and use it, when you have finished just put it away. The battery life is mostly not important has in this case it will spend most of its life plugged into the mains.

Exactly. That's not as small of a niche as you might think, though at this price it certainly is rarefied.

As for battery life, Whoever buys this won't need a battery but a UPS. So there you are.

I think the niche market concept is the key here. Not many ppl'l buys this monstrosity, so exclusivity is guaranteed.
Its' much like getting a Lambo; impractical but oh-so-cool ...
