Euro-hackers on a mission

Last weeks, before the compromise of Microsoft security had come to light, the first international DEF CON hacker convention was gearing up in Amsterdam. An article, written before the news of an apparently Russian penetration of Microsoft, made the case that European hackers are not the same as US hackers. Euro-hackers, the writer says, are more cause-oriented, are less likely to announce their accomplishments and are more likely to be pressured to work with groups including national spy groups and organized crime. In fact, speculations about the cause of death for the legendary German hacker Boris Floricic, known as Tron, include his refusal to cooperate with the Russian mafia and retaliation for breaking into the wrong computer.
