Star Trek Co-Op Coming to PC, Consoles in 2012
UT developer Digital Extremes is working with Bad Robot on an action-packed co-op sequel to Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot.
Digital Extremes, the Canadian studio who co-developed Unreal and the early Unreal Tournament games with Epic as well as worked on other popular titles like the two BioShock games, Dark Sector, Homefront and the upcoming The Darkness 2, is currently working on a "sequel" to J. J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot. The game isn't based on the next movie currently in production, but instead is a stand-alone story which takes place immediately after the 2009 film.
According to Paramount Digital Entertainment, players will take the roles of Kirk and Spock for the very first time. "Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced," said Tom Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment. "Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience."
The game, slated for 2012 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will feature co-op gameplay and a story by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writer/producers of the new Star Trek films, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Digital Extremes will be working closely with Bad Robot, K/O Paper Products and Damon Lindelof (co-creator and executive producer of Lost), Paramount said.
Unsurprisingly, Paramount didn't provide any additional details, only adding that the game will be filled with "action-packed combat." Instead, the publisher will provide a hands-on preview for the press next week during E3 2011, so stay tuned.
