Software that destroys data when your laptop gets stolen
We’ve been harping on about data protection and where it’s hiding for the last 4 months (give or take) but there was nothing to suggest anything was actually being done about it all those discs or laptops that were growing legs and running away.
Other than gluing laptops to desks (which we hear sort of defeats the purpose of laptops) there was nothing in the way of data security in the pipeline.
Well, someone has finally decided to milk the cash cow that is data security in Britain and who can blame them ? At the moment, it is the gold at the end of the rainbow.
British company, Virtuity, have developed a program, which will destroy data on a machine once it’s taken outside of a certain area or network.
Backstopp could also use a webcam to take pictures as the laptop is being moved about the place, which would be handy in identifying thieves or plonkers who leave them in the car over night.
The software is relatively cheap if you consider how much it could save. At around £10 a month per month we’d be sailing the data protection ship. Now if only we can get people to stop leaving them about the place with signs that say “STEAL ME” on them. Baby steps, baby steps.

Sounds daft. I bet more people will have their data accidentally erased by that software than prevented from falling into the wrong hands. What's wrong with encryption?
I suppose its because this software leaves absolutely no margin for error, and anyway, i would prefer one that had a function that did similar things with wireless, if i just pressed a button
Of course if your stealing the laptop to steal data then you would just take the battery out before you moved it and then read the hdd from another pc, making the software worthless...
so it deletes the data if it leaves a certain network?
so what happens if the wireless card fails, or it needs took off the network for maintenence(virus, malware etc)???
surely a better system would be to integrate a hardware mobile phone into a laptop then if a laptop is reported stolen a secret text message could be sent to the machine, instructing the chip to delete all the data.
infact if anyone does that know im gonna sue there asses, its my idea lol
