The DTX System on the Desktop - Nice and Quiet
The DTX system weighs about 6.5 KG and can be set up either horizontally or vertically. A small fold-out stand is integrated in the bottom of the case for vertical operation. Unless the cooling concept for the CPU changes during the remainder of the development, we expect that users will prefer to set up the system vertically. Lying down, the case takes up much more space, and the ventilation slits on the top make it impossible to use that space for a monitor, since it would get too warm and block airflow.
However, in some cases even vertical operation may not be without its problems. If you’ve placed your TFT monitor against a wall, setting up the case behind the monitor means you’ll be losing space on your desk. Folding out the integrated foot basically doubles the unit’s width, and besides, you’ll need to keep some space around the case free to ensure airflow. Note that these comments only apply to the engineering sample tested here. The DTX standard is an open one, though, allowing manufacturers to come up with their own solutions and designs, as long as they conform to the specifications. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
