Crysis 2 Wins Title of Most Pirated Game of 2011
Crysis 2 scored almost 4 million BitTorrent downloads and captured the title of the most pirated PC game of 2011.
According to TorrentFreak, Crysis 2 ended the year with 3.92 million illegal downloads, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with 3.65 million and Battlefield 3 with 3.51 million.
The popularity award on the Xbox 360 goes to Gears of war 3 with 890,000 downloads, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with 830,000 and Battlefield 3 with 760,000. On the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 ended up at 1.28 million downloads, Mario Sports Mix at 1.09 million, and Xenoblade Chronicles at 950,000. TorrentFreak did not list pirated games for the PS3 as their number was too low to be shown in BitTorrent's download charts.
Despite the substantial number of downloaded games, TorrentFreak noted that the top titles in each category saw a decline of downloads over 2010.

A lot of people get pirate copies to see what the game's like if there isnt a trial. I'm not saying people don't pirate just to save money but a lot of people buy the game after if they think its any good or to unlock the multiplayer aspect.
My friend had a pirate copy of battelfield 3 on PC, he bought it because he wanted the multiplayer. Same with MW3. I don't think the whole pirate thing is as bad as what people make out.

I agree with you tjcoops.
its nowhere near as bad as they make it out to be. per capita pc has lower piracey than xbox which has around 20million live users and has banned 5 million for using modded hardware that allowed copied games to play online multiplayer... thats 25 percent. on pc it has a player base of over 1 billion and 5 million pirates thats what? .5% the pc games market surpassed both xbox and ps3 combined last year in moneys earned yet people who buy games on pc are still having to feal with crappy DRM that only affects the legit user... for instance today i cant play any ubi games because all of there servers are off and being updated... while the pirates get to playt there stolen copys hassle free.
please tell me why i shouldn't download the cracks and use them when the games companies wont even let me play my games.
if anything ubi soft has actually encouraged piracey and on occasion when the servers were choked told ubi members to download the crack so they can play the games while the servers were being fixed/upgraded... there is something wrong withthis... and it stinks.
I too do think that when game manufacturers are asking for so such a high cost for their products that they should provide a means to trial them first.
With so many potential compatibility issues on a pc platform the end-user can't be expected to have any certainty that a game will run properly even if the end-users machine meets the required and sometimes very vague specs.
When you consider that retail stores commonly won't refund customers computer game purchases the manufacturer is guaranteed of making a heap of sales to either dissatisfied customers or to those who are unable to get the game to work at all so a trial version should be standard practice or essential (assuming legislation could be passed to that effect).
In the case of some of the online games (bf3, mw3 etc.), their best features are online play and so pirating a game for purposes of an offline campaign seems pretty pointless as most of them aren't that good. The manufacturers could opt to provide an offlince game at all.
Personally in the case of BF3 I haven't played the single-player campaign and don't intend to so a pirated copy wouldn't do me any good.
When you look at global sales of computer games it is believed that the it is currently bigger than the film and tv market combined in terms of profits for those involved and so if they loose some income through their not offering trial versions then so be it.
Hell articles that state which games are pirated most probably increase their sales as it is both free advertising and serves to make people who are unaware of the games wonder what the fuss is about and turn them into another potential paying customer!
to be honest i do find pirating multiplayer based games odd, especially when there multiplayer games like bf3 with a single player tacked on so that people without the web can buy em.
then we have the games like call of duty 4 where they have a great single player but it only lasts 6-8 hours... not only that, these companies are spending so much money trying to make there products secure they are driving up the overall cost by as much as half for the end user, only to have the drm broken within 24 hours of release...
on the subject of rediculouse anti piracey measures, we have the ubi model where you cant play the games because you need a permanent connection to there server only to find the server is offline... end result, the people who actually buy the games cant play while the pirates have a great time laughing at ubi and the genuine players. it really does suck for legit gamers...
really ubi are creating a market for pirated games with there idea of DRM. the best way to stop piracy is start issuing take down orders to wares/torrent sites and actively prosecute sites that dont adhere to the request. im pretty sure it would be easier and cheaper to hire a couple of guys to surf the web hunting em down rather than making every legit gamer suffer. i mean it didnt take them long to close down mininova which was 1 of the worlds biggest torrent hosts...
also going after the uploaders is better than going after downloaders, but going after the downloaders is a potential cash cow, so there is little chance of that happening..
they (the games companies) really do have a poor strategy for combating piracy. especialy when the only looser is the guy that buys there games legit...
on consoles sony has just introduced 1 user keys that are attached to your psn account. M.S. are gonna do the same in an attempt to get money out of the semi legal piracy that is trade in. end result piracy will become even more prevalent on the consoles. they think its bad now? just wait a few months, game sales will plummet and piracey will take off. again causing the prices to rise...
next year i can almost guarantee that xbox will have the top 5 most pirated games next year... well if they bring out 5 decent games, that is...
damn my poor gamma...
