Crytek Says 3D is the Future of Crysis

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Crysis 2 won't be the only title in the franchise to incorporate 3D.

It should come as no surprise that Crytek's roadmap for the Crysis IP will permanently incorporate 3D. Crytek boss Cervat Yerli revealed the company's plans in a recent interview after he was asked if 3D was merely an experiment inserted into the upcoming game, Crysis 2. Surprisingly, he admitted that the sequel is somewhat of a re-launch of the franchise.

"Crysis on consoles for us is pretty much taking the ground that Crysis games will be 3D now and in the future," he said. "Console gamers haven't seen [the original] Crysis yet and when we launch Crysis 2 it's kind of like a re-launch of the franchise. We want to make sure people associate the Crysis brand with 3D gaming in the future."

But he assures fans that it's not just a gimmick, but rather a way to transform the TV or PC monitor into a window leading to a new world. He said that once gamers pick up the controls and experience 3D gaming, they many not ever want to play in 2D again.

Still, isn't the whole 3D buzz just a temporary fad as seen in previous attempts? "I think that it will stay around," he admitted. "As soon as the first affordable 3DTVs arrive I think it's a no-brainer at that point, everyone will adapt. Initially there will be a more hardcore audience. I don't think every game will be 3D right away, but there will be some high-end production value games that will be 3D and will benefit from it."

That may be true, however 3D will probably become more acceptable once the technology no longer needs the use of glasses.

3D is Rubbish.I wish they would focus on making games with more substance instead of all this flash.

Yeah.. I agree, I've no interest in all this 3D gimmick stuff. The media and a few different companies are the only ones excited about 3D.. It was invented in the 50's and put on a shelf to gather dust for a reason.

I saw a demo in a retailer of CoD WAW? using 3d specs... it didn't add anything to the game experience and seemed gimmicy.
If I can get a 3d TV some time in the future with similar specs to a regular tv, and roughly the same price I may get it... but until then I won't go out of my way to adopt.
I had 3d glasses on a Nvidia card back in the 90's that did exactly the same level of 3d immersion as now and that never picked up, why? because it doesn't add anything to the entertainment other than price.

Proper 3d gaming like Bad Company 2 using nvidia 3d vision rules. It does add a great deal to the immersion, though it is only part of the equation, The game needs to be well scripted and also like bad company have excellent sound effects.
There is an initial expense but there is no better way to use the immense graphical power of today's GPU's.
I cannot see a need to use SLI with today's games which are limited by the need to port them to the larger console market with the exception of the 3d vision and 3d surround. Before 3d vision the only benefit of high end gaming PC's really was in bragging rights. Now there is something that actually uses those resources.
