Android's UK Market Share Grows 634% in a Year

by - source: Comscore

Apple has been named the number one smartphone brand in the United Kingdom but Android use is growing extremely fast.

There may be more Android handsets on the market than anyone can count, but that hasn't stopped Apple becoming the number one smartphone brand in Britain. According to Comscore, the Cupertino-based maker of the iPhone has overtaken Symbian in the past year to become the top smartphone platform in the UK with 27.1 percent market share. This represents year-over-year growth of 46 percent for Apple.

However, while Apple may be number one, Android isn't too far behind. Google's mobile OS accounts for for 26.7 of the smartphone market and Comscore reports that Android added nearly 4.7 million new users over the past year, amounting to a 634 percent year-over-year increase. Symbian is in third place now, with a year-over-year decline of 10 percent and 22.5 percent of the market.

Comscore didn't reveal Microsoft and RIM's market share but its graph does claim that Microsoft is down 32 percent and RIM is up 59 percent. Still, it seems RIM isn't happy with Comscore's claim of how many handsets the company has in the UK. TechRadar quotes the Canadian company as saying:

"ComScore estimated that RIM had 3.591 million BlackBerry subscribers in the UK at the end of May 2011 when in fact RIM's UK subscriber base at the end of May 2011 stood at just under 7 million subscribers."
