Chrome OS Benchmarked Against Moblin, Ubuntu

Chrome OS goes up against Fedora 12, openSUSE 11.2, Moblin 2.1 and Unbuntu Netbook Remix 9.10.

We've heard an awful lot about Chrome OS over the last week or so. Between hour-long Google presentations and getting the stripped down OS to run on virtual machines, there's been a lot of talk. However, for all this talk, there's been very little in the way of numbers. For example, how does Chrome OS compare to similar solutions already available?

With the release of the Chome OS source code following hot on the heels of Moblin 2.1 and Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, the folks at Phoronix decided it was high time for some benchmarks. The resulting data covers areas such as video playback performance, encoding, battery power consumption and CPU/memory usage tests. OSes put through the wringer include Fedora 12, openSUSE 11.2, Moblin 2.1, Unbuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and of course, Chrome OS.

Chrome OS can't handle running OpenArena so it drops off rather suddenly in some of the graphs but the results are interesting all the same. All told, Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 came out on top, with openSUSE 11.2 also performing quite well.

While perusing the results you'd do well to remember that ChromeOS isn't actually out for another year. Google has only offered a vague release date of "next year," which suggests later is more likely than Q1 or early Q2. With approximately a year to polish things up, the final build will probably perform better than the version used by Phoronix.

Chrome OS is such a huge disappointment. I knew it wouldn't be a windows killer, but for fucks sake it's exactly the same as running the Chrome browser in any other OS.

Chrome OS is such a huge disappointment."

You did read about this first didn't you? Did you miss the bit that says its a first release of code? Jesus, it doesn't even class as Beta software yet!

Of course it's like running Chrome in any other OS, thats the idea behind all this cloud computing mess, it's just that doing it that way means you get to leave the unwanted crap behind!

Sorry, can't even work out if your comment was serious or sarcasm.

It's not even beta yet, but what do you expect it to become? Do you think it'll progress in functionality massively? I hope so.

And as for 'unwanted crap' I assume you mean being able to edit music, play games, download torrents, edit videos, create animations, and all the other stuff I can normally do on linux. Oh wait, unwanted crap, you're obviously a windows user.

Oh dear, do you make this many assumptions regularly! Chrome a disappointment long before release and me a Windows user although that only accounts for less than 20% of my home usage.

I mean unwanted crap in the same way I meant cloud computing mess. It's designed for basic use, internet browsing, e-mails and messaging. As that is the philosophy behind cloud then yes, all else is unwanted crap.

I do believe it will progress functionally yes, but I certainly wont make any assumptions until Google themselves release something compiled at least, which would indicate they had a direction more than just a brand sat on a Kernel.
