Chiltern Railways Launches Paperless Ticket App
No more fiddling about with those blasted ticket machines.
It seems like the whole world is talking about Near Field Communication and how it’s going to change our lives. While most are focusing on the implementation of this technology in the mobile payments realm, the possibilities that this wireless data transfer technology offers are endless, and it’s been suggested for everything from paperless plane tickets to parking passes.
However, until phones with NFC support become more widespread (and retailers and other businesses start to use it), businesses must look for alternative solutions if they want to maintain momentum towards eliminating paper-based proceedings. Chiltern Railways is leading the way with the launch of a mobile train ticketing app for iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung owners.
The new app, launched this week at Marylebone station, boasts an integrated mobile ticketing system that enables passengers to buy, instantly receive and validate their train tickets (on the train or at the station). Rather than NFC, the new system uses QR codes and scanners.
With an Android version listed only as ‘coming soon,’ there's a whole userbase that won't be able to use this app right away. However, by using QR codes, Chiltern Railways has ensured that a lot of people with older devices will be able to use the service too. For more on the app, click here.

About time, having to collect your online-purchased tickets from the station was a really dumb idea (especially if the station didn't have collection facilities), they should have done it with codes long, long ago!
