Atlanta (GA) - Monday night’s presidential debate featuring questions from Youtube users broke viewership records among the 18-34 age group.
According to Hollywood Reporter, an average of 2.6 million viewers tuned in to the two-hour debate on CNN. That makes it the second most watched debate on a cable channel, and among 18- to 34-year-olds, it made it to the top.
CNN’s first 2008 presidential debate on June 3 scored a total of 2.8 million viewers. During that broadcast, though, only 368,000 were in the coveted 18-34 demographic. Monday’s debate drew in 407,000 viewers from the youthful crowd.
The Democratic debate, which took place at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, had no panel of questioners. Instead, all questions came in the form of videos submitted by Youtube users, which were then hand picked by CNN. Around 40 Youtube videos were shown during the live 7:00 - 9:00 broadcast on Monday night.
The same format will be used for CNN’s next Republican debate on September 17. Users can submit videos to be considered for the debate from a special link at Youtube.com.
