New 'Boinc' Music Service Headed for UK

by - source: PC World

Spotify may have garnered hundreds of thousands of new subscribers after it cut the amount of free music available to non-paying users but soon there will be a new music streaming service on the block and it's taking aim at companies like Spotify.

Spotify and Google Music will soon have another music streaming service to compete with. The new service, dubbed Boinc, is set to launch in the UK and US before the end of the year and, when it does, it will come with a "guilt free" price model. Embedded into devices like computers, tablets and smartphones, Boinc will operate on a 'pay-once' pricing scheme that will see the cost of the service rolled into the smartphone, tablet, PC or even car.

"The artists, record labels, and music publishers are all central to our model," reads Boinc's website. "Their music is licensed to allow us to create a vast music library and in turn we pay them when a user plays their music in our system. Users play, we pay allowing users to enjoy the music they want guilt free."

However, buying a device with Boinc already embedded is not the only way to use the service. You can also purchase a license for your device by downloading the Boinc app.

"The end user can either purchase a pre-boinc’d device or boinc his/her own device by purchasing a license. The license lasts for the lifetime of the device," the company says. "Users can listen to the music they love and support the artists they care about without any additional fees or advertising."

If you plan on replacing your device, you can repurchase the app and retrieve your music collection from the cloud. Boinc has not offered any information on pricing but we'll update if and when we hear more.

Interesting idea, but calling it boink? Would using it be called boinking? If we get more companies going down this line, with Nintendo, we'll have plenty of scope for some sort of Carry On revival film
