BioWare Wants More Sex in Games

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Dragon Age lead designer Mike Laidlaw wants to see more sex in videgames.

Does BioWare want to see more sex in games? Perhaps not the company as a whole, however Dragon Age Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw expressed his need for more virtual skin trades in a short interview with Destructoid. Basically, he was asked if sex will ever be acceptable in videogames, and if the mainstream media will stop whining over the idea. The question stems from "erotic chicanery" found in the upcoming game Dragon Age as well as the sex scandal surrounding Mass Effect.

"Well I think what we're seeing is an evolution of the age of gamer, the mainstream kind of impact that games are having, and we're still battling the last of the perception that games are for kids," he said. "So if games are for kids and sex is not for kids, why is sex in games? To my mind, the hurdle to cross is to say, 'You know, games are not for kids.' I'm not a kid, I probably burn a good three hours a night playing games, married, comfortably happy, definitely not a child."

He hopes that "news anchors," those that are actually gamers, will eventually step in and sweep away the current prejudices by getting the mainstream media to understand that there are adult games just like there are rated-R movies. Until the media understands that gaming now has a wide ranging spectrum rather than the narrow focus of the early years, there will be "hissy fits" in regards to gaming violence and sex. However, despite the scandals and complaints, the industry will keep evolving, possibly bringing more adult-oriented situations.

"Will we see more of [sex in games]? I hope so, I really do," he admits. "I mean, it's not a mandatory part of any experience, but is it something we should shy away from? I don't think so, it's part of the human experience, so why not? Does a game have to be about sex? No. Can it be in there? Sure. Why not?"

john999199919991 :
i agree afterall there are always been hardcore dvds and so on and sex in movies even the indians are incoporating this nasty bedroom thing and following in the footsteps of the westeners. As for games many people already play japanese adult video games on the pcs - some people have to aquire them illegally, but people don't have any other choice. Afterall i hate being treated like a kid.... One thing i never understood is kids are having sex and becoming pregnant or needing abortion and they have a huge probelm with teenage pregancy but they can't buy top-shelf magazing while they can indulge in the actual activity and even they teach them how to have sex in the school and provide free condom, yet still the issue is around!Obviously your society has failed and is hopeless... Atleast in france and germany where they have sex in the streets all the time and in front of toddlers and the like, i never hear such problems - you need to go back to your bible and follow what jesus would like you to do!bye. jon the great.

Anyone else think Tom's should have dropped the 'in games' from the title?..

Jon the "Great". Did your parents drop you much when you were little? The Bible is Sci-fi just like Scientology and others. I think you dreamt that you were in France and/or Germany and then woke up in your trailerpark and groped your cousin out of sexual frustration. Do you think your pal Jesus would like his representatives (priests) to fiddle with little boys. I bet you he wouldn't, but yet it happens all the time. So what if people spank a little monkey to some adult-software, what gives you the right to judge them? It's always the same with you religious fanatics!

All in all - yeah John went a bit over the top with the bible thing... But I sort of agree:
1. fact - teenagers are having sex at the age of 12-13-14 in the UK.
2. fact - pornography is not "legally" available to them.
3. fact - they have access to the pornography on the net as everyone else.
4. assumption - making porn a legal thing will not make things worse or better. It's just already available so what is the point? They might as well do it - at least some of the twats will start collecting magazines instead of raping their female school-mates.
5. assumption - teaching at school is probably bollocks anyway - as they talk about "love", "parenthood" and stuff - boys will never be interested in that... plus the moment they see breasts on a video - the teacher's commentary will go away... So... perhaps someone should show them soft-porn for a few days... and when they get bored with it - explain how it all works...?
6. fact - times have changed - people are different... perhaps it's all normal? Back in 60's things were different for some people... maybe... it's happening again?
