Battlestar Galactica MMO Game in Development

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

The end of the modern day Battlestar Galactica was a sad day for sci-fi fans, but those who are into online gaming can relive some of the good memories this as Bigpoint and Unity are currently developing a browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Game based on the TV series.

The game will be straight-forwardly titled Battlestar Galactica Online, which is described in the press release as follows:

Players will be able to choose to play as cylons or humans in a constant struggle to control the universe or just survive its perils. A blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay will provide a diverse experience. The dramatic missions will define the game's overall storyline, enabling the player to delve into mysteries of the Battlestar universe. Battlestar Galactica Online will create a new standard for web games, with beautiful 3d graphics and innovative game mechanics bringing a new level of game play to browser based MMOG. Assets from the television production will be integrated into the game to deliver an even more authentic experience.

While the prospect of a browser-based game means that we won't be expecting graphics that'll stress even the modest versions of modern GPUs, but the tech demos from Unity3D show that browser gaming can go well beyond Bejeweled.

While the show was good, I'm not sure it will make a good MMO.

I think the storyline faltered with Caprica. One good episode so far, and the start sequence/opening credits? It's nearly as bad as the first few series of Enterprise, absolutely ridiculous!
