BT to Create Largest Open Wi-Fi Network in the World

by - source: Tom's hardware UK

In a move to head 3G off at the pass with regard to in-home broadband, BT and FON have proposed to create the world’s most extensive Wi-Fi network by having users open up their Wi-Fi routers for other people to use, in exchange for allowing them to use the Wi-Fi connection of anyone else on the collective service.

BT hopes to persuade all of its customers to allow others to piggy-back off of each others broadband, thus creating a huge Wi-Fi network.

Upon joining the community, customers agree to allow other people to use their broadband connection via their wireless routers, and it in turn they may surf other users connections for free. The BitTorrent of wireless broadband, if you will.

Now BT, the UK’s largest ISP, has decided to climb aboard the FON train. If BT customers agree to share their connection this would mean that the telco’s Openzone Wi-Fi network would stretch across three million Home Hubs.

BT users will gain access to FON’s global network of 190,000 Hotspots and other users’ internet connections at no extra charge.

BT has also invested a substantial amount to FON, which was founded in Spain in 2006, and in doing so have earned a seat on the company board

great idea, when you exceed your download limits then use your neighbours, want to download something dodgy, easy go do it via FON or your neighbours system.. what a wonderfully stupid idea..

Why not extend this so everybody can use each others houses / cars etc..

BT also invested heavily in Radiant networks .. ho hum..
