BT Planning Music Service; Free for 6 Months

by - source: The Guardian

BT is reportedly considering a digital music service in an effort to combat file sharing.

File sharing is a big issue for media companies today and movie, music and TV producers are constantly trying to come up with new ways to make money and prevent piracy in this digital age. However, this week it's BT making headlines for its anti-piracy efforts. Rumour has it the company is considering a digital music service.

According to a leaked Invitation to Tender document, BT is currently engaged in ongoing discussions with major music labels and plans to unveil the service 'in the near future.' The Guardian reports that the music service would be available to BT's 5.5 million broadband users across the country and would be free for the first six to nine months, as BT has said it will forego profit for that period.

Pricing following the initial free period has not been settled upon, and we're assuming that's a step BT will have trouble with. What kind of price model would you want to see? Subscription-based all you can eat? Pay-per-tune, like iTunes? Let us know in the comments below!

Instead of creating a new music service, perhaps they should invest more in sorting out their crappy internet back haul which at peak times grinds to a halt. Also a good idea would be to plow more money into the fiber broadband upgrade scheme.
