BBC's Global iPlayer Hits the iPad for €7 Per Month
Europeans can now access BBC's popular iPlayer application on their iPads.
You might remember last month, when the BBC announced that the first step in bringing the iPlayer to people outside of the UK would be iPad access for Western Europe. Well, this week, three and a half years after the Beeb's iPlayer first launched, the global rollout has begun.
The BBC today released the iPad version of iPlayer to audiences across Europe, giving them access to a healthy mix of classic British TV programming, current TV shows, and news and documentaries for just €7 per month (just over £6). You can also gain access via an annual subscription for €49.99 (just under £44).
"I'm proud that we're one of the first international broadcasters to give access to our shows in a perfectly packaged app," said John Smith CEO BBC Worldwide. "This launch is an important route to market in our strategy of pursuing multiple platforms for our programmes and brands, taking British programmes to new digital audiences around the world. Today marks a significant next step on a digital journey that has already seen 12m BBC Worldwide apps downloaded across brands as diverse as Lonely Planet and Good Food."
Users will be able to catch up with Fawlty Towers and Only Fools & Horses, as well as new shows like Sherlock, Luther and Pride and Prejudice. Of course, it wouldn't be a British on-demand video service without the likes of EastEnders, Top Gear and Doctor Who, so they're all present as well. Similar to how iPlayer works here in the UK, the BBC plans to add new content to the global player every week.
