BBC iPlayer comes to the Wii
The BBC is expected to launch a version of the iPlayer for the Nintendo Wii today.
Erik Huggers, BBC’s group controller for Future Media and Technology, announced the news regarding the deal with Nintendo at the MipTV-Milia conference in Cannes.
"The BBC’s catch-up TV service can now be accessed on an increasing number of different platforms - from the web and portable devices to gaming consoles."
The BBC has said that while the service will be available today, it will be releasing improved software after further development.
The iPlayer is already available on the iPhone and the iPod touch as well as debuting over Christmas on the PC.
The iPlayer has seen huge amounts of success since it’s launch at the end of last year.
During the seasonal period (and Christmas day especially), over 1 million users watched more than 3.5 million shows with popularity increasing every month since then.
In March more than 17.2 million requests to download or stream BBC programmes were made via the iPlayer, which is a 25% increase on the previous month and means more than 42 million programmes have been accessed via the iPlayer since its launch.
In February the BBC announced that a Mac compatible version of the iPlayer was on the way but is not expected until much later in the year.
