Beeb offers free Wi-Fi access to BBC Online

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

The BBC has announced that its online services can now be accessed for free at Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

In a deal with The Cloud, users can now access the BBC’s online services from any of the Wi-Fi company’s 7,500 hotspots around Britain.

The BBC offers the BBC News website, BBC program sites and the viewing/downloading of TV shows, though these downloads can only be kept on your computer for up to one month. The company has also called in Adobe, who is providing a Flash player for all the sites video features, including video streaming through the iPlayer.

While the TV catchup feature is currently only available for Windows XP users, Mac and Linux users can expect access to this feature from the end of the year. Although the BBC has not committed to a download service for Mac and Linux, users will be able to view the shows while on location at a hotspot.

The Beeb hopes to see Nokia95 and PSP users accessing the site and downloading video content but admits the service will, at first, be mainly accessed by laptops owners.
