Asus' ExpressGate 2.0 Instant-On OS Demoed
In April of 2008, Asus' instant-on OS SlashTop was rebranded as "ExpressGate" and almost exactly two years on, we're getting a little sneak-peak at ExpressGate 2.0.
Earlier this month, the technology industry gathered in Germany for CeBit and Asus was there to demo the company's second iteration of ExpressGate. Notebook Italia (via Engadget) captured it all on video.
Everything looks a little sleeker than before, and as Engadget's Donald Melanson points out, Asus seems to have taken a few from Palm and WebOS' cards system. There's also a simple little dock for applications and more customization options, which allow you to change desktop themes and UI. Perhaps most notable is the addition of touchscreen support to accommodate the Eee T91MT and Eee T101MTĀ

I've got ExpressGate but never felt the need to actually use it...
my ExpressGate has been pretty cool actually - just need to check a few e-mails or get on a Skype call and I'm online in a few seconds.
I wonder if I can upgrade my boards with ExpressGate 2?
I've seen this on a laptop and pc but never really seen the use of it. Does the extra 30-60s to boot into windows really matter that much? If it's more functional that ver 1, maybe, but then that functionality will come with the overheads and boot times that it's designed to do away with...
Never had it myself but I built a system for a mate with it on. I like it. A lot.
Unless I'm actually working (rare), I spend the majority of my time online and checking emails etc. If I can boot up 'instantaneously' to do what I do the most often then it's certainly not a bad thing. And it means I'd be more likely to shutdown my PC inbetween, reducing my electricity bill, and I love to reduce my carbon footprint (only joking - I don't give a f*ck about my carbon footprint).
Having said that, with the current range of smartphones giving us an ever increasing array of capabilities, I find I don't turn my PC on as often anyway.
Boot time isn't an issue for me on my pc, I stick it in S3 standby and it's up before the screen registers the connection
I can see more of a use for it on a laptop but still not enough to sacrifice a full browser/media player and access to all those little apps you use without thinking until they are gone
