12-inch Asus Eee Netbook Running on Nvidia Ion

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

A recent leak has shown us a little of what Asus is planning on doing with its Eee PC line and we gotta say, we like what we're seeing.

Asus hasn't officially announced an Ion-infused Eee PC that we know of, which is why it was quite surprising to see (via Liliputing) one Chinese website display a product page for an Eee PC 1201N with a 12-inch display, 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU and Nvidia Ion graphics.

Now, we'll leave out the bit about how we're completely against anything with a display over 10-inches (maybe we can stretch to 11-inches) that claims to be a netbook and instead express our enthusiasm for an Eee PC with Ion graphics. Pretty neat, huh?

Specs-wise you're looking at a 12-inch widescreen HD display (1366 x 768), 2 GB of RAM, 250 GB hard drive, Nvidia's GeForce 9400M and of course, Intel's Atom N270 (which clocks in at 1.6 GHz). Liliputing tentatively reports 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Ethernet, a VGA port, USB, audio I/O, and a 6 cell, 5200mAh battery that’s capable of up to 11 hours of run time too.

What say ye?

If you're gonna do a netbook with 12-inch screen then at least put a dual-core Atom in, or are Intel still moaning about it being too much muscle for a netbook?

We still have the definition problem. I still think a netbook (as in for the net) should be portable and low powered. If they become more powerful and able to carry out more tasks then the netbook name isn't really applicable. In which case another more appropriate name is needed. Like - notebook? :) Yeah that's it. A 10" notebook.

My NC10 boots Vista (SLOWLY - awful), OS X (nice and quick - very good), and Ubuntu 9.04 which even with XP running in Virtualbox is quick enough despite the fact that I have yet to upgrade to 2 Gig RAM. I briefly tried the Windows 7 Beta and it was reasonably good as it happens.

As long as you remember what a netbook is for you won't go wrong. I use mine for (amongst a few other things) internet access, emails, watching movies, listening to music and messing with graphical and word processing apps. Anything else I do at home on a 'proper' machine. It's not exactly rapid but you'd have to be pretty impatient to not find it suitable for this kind of use.

Is a more powerful machine really necessary in this size?
