Say Goodbye to Your iPad When the Battery Fails

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Apple has long been criticized for the enclosed batteries in the iPhone and MacBook line of laptops. Because the batteries are sealed inside, the batteries are not removable and, in the event of diminished battery life, must be replaced by Apple.

Over the weekend it emerged that iPad users would also have to send their devices to Apple if they wanted a replacement battery. However, unlike iPhones and MacBooks, Apple isn't going to crack open your iPad and replace the battery, it's going to send you a new one.

Yesterday lunchtime, Apple posted an FAQ for the iPad's Battery Replacement Service (via Engadget). Apple's solution to a dead battery is to send you a new iPad, with none of your data.

If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.

This service fee is later detailed as $99, plus $6.95 shipping. The total cost being  $105.95 per unit.

Apple goes on to say that any data on the iPad you send in, will be lost.

"No. You will receive a replacement iPad that will not contain any of your personal data. Before you submit your iPad for service, it is important to sync your iPad with iTunes to back up your contacts, calendars, email account settings, bookmarks, apps, etc. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information when servicing your iPad."

Battery replacement (along with proprietry software) has always put me off apple products. Good to see they're addressing that issue then ...

Seriously, how hard would it be to engineer removable batteries? Sheesh.

In all honesty, this is a great move by apple 'for' apple. By the time the batteries start to fail, they'll have lots of old kit hanging around from damages etc and this way they can get rid of that stock as refurbs and the circle keeps on going and they keep on making money.

This way, anyone that buys an iPad, without extra warranty, should realise that they will eventually have a refurb device and battery for £99.

I don't agree with this 'but' whoever buys IS buying into a closed system. You cannot complain when the information is right in front of you... like a Nintendo DS, for instance.

Will I buy one? Umm, no. I have a Dell XT with an SSD drive and that's the best of ALL worlds.

Hmm another Apple own goal ? ipad users get a new ipad loosing all their data in the process. What happens to the "old" ipad ? do they refurb it ? crush it ??? completely and securely erase all the data ???

Apple... are you listening ? even the most useless gadget owenr / customer could replace a battery.

They are just using the usual American gimmick to make money.

Like HP, Dell, Toshiba..... Just stop buying their crappy product and they will learn....

That the problem with trend people buy before asking themselves if they should.

Im happy I don't have such crap in my life :P

This is why I hate Apple. All you blinkered Apple fans can just ignore this article and continue with your lazy and ill informed product purchasing. That's right.... buy the shiny thing....you know you want to...... it's beautiful...... mmmmmmmmmmmm........ my precious.....

Conspicuous consumption is for idiots.

I must applaud apple acting in the best interests of their customers in this case. Those batteries need to be in a hardend enclosure where we can't get at them becuase their batteries are known to EXPLODE.

For the first time I agree with Apple. This way the consumer gets its whole product replaced for a fee. That's good since probably at the time your battery needs replacement, some of the hardware may be almost failing too. So you get some proper maintenance for a premium priced piece of hardware and automatic warranty extension.

Hmmm and the storage of all your data goes where exactly ?? Does apple fry the drives ??

I'm not trying to defend Apple but the storage is non-issue that's why I only pointed the good side. I expect anyone that reads from this site or related would by now know that they should never take a computer, mobile phone or other device that contains personal information to service without wiping it. That, of course means you have to back up first.

I'm tempted to get an iPad now, just so I can DESTROY IT WITH FIRE, and post the video on youtube and make many people happy.

Agreed - but in the entirely possible instance that the battery dies and you cannot wipe the device then you still have the issue over security of personal information being obtained by another user.

You're right on that point. Knowing Apple as I know, it won't take a month until they have a service for backing up your files to your ipod,imac,... if you take it to their services. Just expect the usual Apple service price.

Product flawed (no proper multi tasking) next we hear apple will charge you for replacement when the battery dies (do they expect it to ?).... thne get ready for the premium service which inclueds recovering your data.

Never liked apple products, never owned one and definately wont be owning one in the near future
