ITV rig phone-in contest, Ant and Dec win award
All the hubbub around Ant and Dec was temporarily (and conveniently) forgotten last night as the two were crowned the most popular entertainment presenters at the National Television Awards.
Ant and Dec attracted a rake of media attention and caused truck-loads of controversy when it was revealed that ITV rigged their phone-in competitions.
Last month an independent report showed that the duo’s show, Saturday Night Takeaway, routinely ignored votes or didn’t register votes that were phoned in by users. It emerged that ITV viewers phoned in a completely pointless £6.5m worth of phone calls to the shows.
The pair are both cited as executive producers on the show although the people at ITV have said that these were merely “vanity titles” saying that they have absolutely nothing to do with the production of the show. The station will pay out an estimated £18m to viewers for the blunder.
All this seemed to have no affect on the two last night as they came away from the awards ahead of Jonathan Ross, Graham Norton, Paul O’Grady and Fern Britton. I wonder who counted the votes. . .
