Report: Amazon App Store Accessible in Europe, Australia
Is Amazon's Appstore finally about to hit the United Kingdom?
Amazon pushed its own Android Appstore live in March. Soon after it launched in the U.S., the company came out and assured users that international versions were coming soon.
"We are launching now in the US, however we are a global business and we will continue to evaluate opportunities to do what's in the best interest of our customers," a spokesperson for Amazon said at the time, adding, "At this time, we have not announced plans on international launches."
Amazon still hasn't made any mention of international launches, but that doesn't seem to have stopped the company starting what appears to be an international roll out. PCR reports that a number of Amazon customers have reported that the firm's Android shop is taking orders in Europe and in Australia. Whether this is intended to be a quiet launch or a case of someone pushing the big red button ahead of schedule remains to be seen.
When Amazon launched its Android Appstore in the U.S., it distinguished itself from Google's Android Market by regularly offering paid apps for free. Amazon also has to approve every single application that appears in the store, meaning users have less garbage to wade through while browsing. The company has not said if it will continue the occasional free download for international versions of the store, but we can't imagine why it wouldn't.
