Airbus A380 to buzz Wichita airport
Wichita (Kansas) – Wichita residents will get a special treat tomorrow morning as the Airbus A380 jumbo jet will buzz the Mid-Continent airport. The jet will be flying from Cincinnati to San Francisco and will make the low pass to reward engineers that helped build the plane.
Airbus plans on buzzing the airport twice starting at 7:40 AM tomorrow. The plane will approach from the north and fly by the runway at just 500 feet above the ground.
You may be thinking, “Why not just land the plane at the airport ?” The Airbus A380 is just too large and heavy for the regional airport. The best runway at Mid-Continent is 7300 feet long, 150 feet wide and rated for 400,000 lbs. The empty weight of the A380 is more than 600,000 pounds. The FAA also recommends a minimum runway width of 200 feet for the A380.
