Air Force Grounds Training Jet After Second Fatal Crash

by - source: Tom's Hardware

El Paso (Texas) - The United States Air Force has grounded its supersonic T-38C training jet after its second fatal crash in eight days. Two pilots died in the crash which happened near Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. On April 23, another T-38C crashed near Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.

The T-38C jet is used as a supersonic jet trainer for pilots going into high-performance fighter and bomber jets. It has two seats for the student and trainer.

Since 1959, the T-38C crashes have claimed 138 lives. Of course, this seemingly astounding number of deaths is probably due to the plane being flown by inexperienced student pilots, rather than any aerodynamic or inherent safety faults. However, the Air Force isn’t taking any chances and has grounded the fleet for an in-depth safety evaluation.
