Advanced Micro Devices' chief of the software research and development group has promised that the Linux operating system and AMD's forthcoming 64-bit architecture will be compatible. According to The Register, developers working on the Linux port to AMD's architecture say the company has included the Linux community in its 64-bit plans early enough for programmers to prepare for the technology. Other chipmakers, while providing information on their technology to open-source developers, have reportedly done so late in the game.

AMD's x86-64 architecture Sledgehammer and Clawhammer chips will be available in the second half of next year. AMD plans to see that the 64-bit architecture works with SuSE and Red Hat Linux as well as Windows, Solaris, DOS and OS/2.
