6200+ - The Model that wasn’t
Although the core frequency of the 6400+ is only 200 MHz higher than that of the 6000+, AMD has skipped 6200+ as a model number. The reason for this decision lies in the processors integrated memory controller.
We know from past observation that a 6200+ model may very well follow. It would be equipped with 512 KB of L2 cache per core.
The memory frequency is directly linked to the processor’s frequency: • 6000+: 3000 MHz / 8 = DDR2-750 • 6400+: 3200 MHz / 8 = DDR2-800
Since the new clock speed of 3200 uses a full-integer divisor, the resulting memory speed is exactly DDR2-800. Thus, the memory frequency has seen a boost of 25MHz (50 MHz DDR) as well. Both the core speed and the memory speed have increased by 6.6%.
The Athlon 64 X2 64000+ uses a multiplier of 16x. This multiplier is locked. We don’t understand this choice on AMD’s part, since buyers should be able to expect an unlocked multiplier from the name “Black Edition”. Since it doesn’t look like there will be another FX processor, it would seem that the days of unlocked multipliers are over for the AM2 platform.
