This story is never going to end is it? And just keeps getting stranger and stranger. According to an article on EETimes.com , it looks like all the talk about AMD (with HyperTransport) and Intel (with 3GIO/Arapahoe) being arch rivals in the race to find a replacement for PCI was just talk. In fact, in last Friday's PCI-SIG vote on whether or not endorse 3GIO, AMD voted in favor of Intel's I/O technology. In the story, Gabrielle Satori, head of the recently announced HyperTransport consortium said, "We voted yes. HyperTransport is actually complementary to this. There are similarities between the two, but one thing we can't forget is that we have 12.8 GBytes/second now, and two years from now we'll have much more than that." He's also quoted as saying, "We are now building one HyperTransport link to multiple PCI-X links, and if (Arapahoe) is really necessary for users, and the market really needs Arapahoe, we'd just evolve the [HyperTransport] spec and go into it. We are simply doing as we did for all the other I/O technologies." So, for now, there you have it. Everyone's working and playing nicely together, which is always a plus for we lowly end users who don't get to attend the meetings and vote for what we want.
