Advanced Micro Devices Inc. president Hector de J. Ruiz confirmed earlier reports that his company is negotiating with upstart Transmeta Corp. about trading technologies aimed at producing very low-end consumer PCs and PC appliances. AMD wants Transmeta's low-power chip technology to help cut power consumption in its Athlon and Duron microprocessors, perhaps to only 1 watt. These comments were made on the same day that Via announced its low-end PC initiative. According to an AMD VP, the Athlon and Duron core could be implemented in the low-cost market very quickly. AMD is reportedly also interested in Transmeta technologies for use in the handheld Internet devices market.
