Tom's Readers Get the Eyefinity Treatment

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Three monitors are always better than one!

This past weekend, six lucky Tom's Hardware readers got to sit down with us here in our Culver City office. It's always fun to meet and chat with readers of both Hardware and Guide, be it at a convention or LAN party... but it’s always more fun on our home turf, especially when we have a surprise in store for them.

In conjunction with AMD and EA, Tom's brought the readers in to play with a top-of-the-line Eyefinity gaming rig, complete with a Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition processor, 5870 graphics card, and three Dell 2310 23-inch (1920x1080) monitors. The day was replete with Dragon Age: Origins, Modern Warfare 2, and Supreme Commander. Playing any game at a 5760x1080 resolution is going to be amazing, but Dragon Age was especially fun because it's optimized for an Eyefinity setup.

Games were played, prizes were won, and plenty of Red Bull and soda was consumed, without a doubt. What you see is here merely a glimpse of the days' events, as there will be plenty of pictures and video over the next week. Stay tuned!

Agreed, that monitor looks nice. Only thing to remember though is with 3 screen eyefinity, at least one of them needs to be running a DisplayPort connector. If your monitor doesn't have one (and that BenQ doesn't) then you'll have to buy an ACTIVE DVI-DP adapter, a passive one won't work.

Sure will - should be here in the morning!

Am budgeting with having to buy an active display port adapter for one of them ;)

Nice setup you have there!

The £150 BenQ has arrived and actually seems fairly good so far :)

I haven't run the calibration setup yet or played any games, but the quality seems very similar to the £250 Acer S243HL which my bro bought around the same time.

I think his is "very slightly" better, but if he had the choice he'd buy the cheaper one and save £100

Was ok on movies - though side by side the colours were different than the Acer, slightly - not wrong - both on their own are great, sometimes prefer one and then the other in different scenes...

Both monitors have a common TN "feature":

(am sitting close) grab a window and drag it from top to bottom and can notice a slight colour change - a gentle lightening of the blue - due to the increased viewing angle.

But will test on some games later - if they seem good, think I will be buying 2 more of these BenQ's

Note BenQ Connections: 1x Analogue & 1x DVI-D

and

I hear that an Active Display Port to Analogue (or was it a DVI-D) adapter costs about $20 instead of the $100 for the HDMI version which I will save me some more money :D

Too bad it doesn't really work...it looks ok if you have 16:9 monitors, but if you have 5:4, it is messed up. I wish they made it more intelligent about resizing the viewport based on the display.
