850MHz Athlon ships

Again leaving Intel behind in the megahertz race, AMD has started shipping its 850MHz Athlon processor for desktop PCs.

Intel's fastest Pentium III chip currently runs at 800MHz.

The newest AMD Athlon, priced at $849 in 1,000-unit quantities, will be available immediately in PCs from Compaq, IBM and Gateway.

As an example, Gateway is shipping a Select 850 PC priced at $2,899 with the 850MHz chip, 100MB of memory and a 19" monitor.
