400 MHz to 1 GHz Embedded DRAM

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Embedded DRAM (eDRAM) hasn't been put to much use, primarily because it costs a lot to produce. However, eDRAM could have a significant impact on applications like voice over Internet protocols by allowing DSPs to handle up to ten times more channels per packet. According to a story on EETimes.com , NEC and Atmos are working together to develop affordable eDRAM chips that run at between 400 MHz and 1 GHz. They think the technology could replace SRAM in network processors, DSPs, ATM switches, and routers. The companies expect to start shipping volume quantities of the chips based on the 130-nanometer process by summer of 2002, prototype parts on the 0.13-micron process in the second half of next year, and launch full production of the 0.13 micron chips sometime in 2003. They also expect the chips to become much more popular. They figure the market for eDRAM will increase from $43 million this year to $174 million by 2004.
