Samsung: A 2GHz Smartphone by 2012

by - source: Mashable (Yahoo! News)

That's quite a punch your phone is packing...

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that the smartphone industry has come far enough that 1GHz CPUs are the status quo. There’s even a few dual-core options out there, and with rumors that the new iPhone will pack Apple’s own dual-core A5 chip, dual-core cell phones are likely to become more popular. Yes, smartphones are becoming ridiculously powerful.

Still, Samsung, which will soon release a 1.2GHz dual-core version of its Galaxy S smartphone, is not resting on its laurels. The company this week promised we’d see a 2GHz Samsung smartphone by next year. Mashable cites a “high ranking Samsung official” who confirmed plans for a 2GHz mobile phone CPU during a conversation with the Maeli Business Newspaper.

"We are planning to release a 2GHz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year. This product will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC," the official said.

However, those panicking that they’ll have to go Samsung if they want the fasted phone out there need not worry. Samsung is said to be considering selling the chips separately to third party manufacturers.

Samsung's 1.2GHz Galaxy S2 is set for a May launch in the United Kingdom. It will use Samsung's own dual-core Exynos CPU. The North American release for this device has yet to be announced.

I think I'm going to wait on buying a smartphone now. Lots of progress in a short space of time is always great.
